Utilizing blended learning methods, particularly flipped classes, certain courses incorporate pre-recorded video lectures uploaded to MVTV, the official YouTube channel of SJCC. Students engage with these videos before class, with teachers providing guidance as students work through assignments. This approach fosters a flexible learning environment and cultivates a culture of independent learning among students.
A novel concept, the Commerce Lab serves as a practical space for students to apply theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom. Here, students conduct various experiments related to commerce, including simulations of major business activities, demonstrations of stock markets, and discussions on the Indian financial system and business innovations. Through hands-on learning experiences, students gain practical insights into the workings of successful business ventures, enhancing their understanding of commercial practices.
Designed for students without a commerce background, the department offers a 30-hour bridge course aimed at providing a foundational understanding of accounting principles and terminology. This equips students with the necessary knowledge to comprehend and apply basic accounting concepts within the commerce stream.
As an extension activity, the Department of Commerce organizes the Charity Challenge, where students bring packed lunches to distribute to residents of "SNEHALAYAM," a care home for mental patients near the college. This initiative fosters empathy among students towards the underprivileged and elderly, nurturing a sense of social responsibility.
While not mandatory, students are encouraged to undertake internships during summer vacations to gain practical experience and apply classroom learning in real-world settings. Additionally, regular industrial visits are organized to familiarize students with market trends and industry practices.
The Department of Commerce spearheads the activities of the NSS and Rotary Club within the college, under the coordination of Mr. Nithin Babu, a faculty member. These initiatives encompass various extension and outreach activities aimed at serving the community.
Each year, the Department of Commerce organizes life skills programmes for students. These programmes offer skill-oriented courses in areas such as paper bag making, beautician and makeup, and electrical installation and plumbing. By participating in these courses, students develop confidence and self-reliance.
