The well-known Indian sculptor, KanayiKunhiraman, visited SJCC on September 10, 2024. The theme of the session was Art as a Representation of Culture and was focused on the students of MA, BA Interior and Architecture and Artistry, and BA Visual Communication. KanayiKunhiraman, who is best known for his outsize sculptures, was born on July 25, 1937, in Kuttamath, Kasaragod district. Yakshi of Malampuzha Dam Garden, Sagarakanyaka of ShankumughamBeach, and Mukkola Perumal at GCDA Complex are some of his well-known artworks. In 1976 he was appointed as the head of the department in Sculpture of Fine Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram. After that, he served as the principal till 1978. In 1979 he was nominated as the chairman of Lalithakala Academy. Finally, in 2001 he became the chairman of Lalithakala Academy. The session officially began with a welcome speech by Mr Thomas Joseph, the Vice Principal and the introductory talk by Dr. Joseph Parackal, the Principal. During the session, he talked about his childhood and the barriers he faced while choosing sculpting as his profession. He also talked about his college days at the University of London. Kunhiraman also shared his love for sculpturing and how the works of different artists have inspired him throughout his journey.
