Archbishop Thomas Tharayil became the new patron of St. Joseph College of Communication succeeding Archbishop Joseph Perumthottam, who retired after reaching the age of 75. As the college is owned and managed by the Archdiocese of Changanacherry, the Metropolitan Archbishop traditionally serves as its patron. The appointment of Archbishop Thomas Tharayil as the new Metropolitan Archbishop of Changanacherry was made by Mar Raphael Thattil, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church. The announcement came from the Vatican at noon (Italian time) on Friday, August 30, 2024, and was also officially declared at 3:30 PM IST at Mount St. Thomas, India. Born on February 2, 1972, to T.J. Joseph and Mariamma, Archbishop Tharayil was ordained a priest on January 1, 2000. He holds a doctorate in psychology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Previously, he served as the Auxiliary Bishop of Changanacherry, having been ordained on April 23, 2017. Archbishop Thomas Tharayil has authored several books on psychology and is fluent in Malayalam, English, German, Italian, and Spanish. Archbishop Thomas Tharayil is also recognized as an excellent counsellor, a well-known preacher, theologian, and an adept administrator. His deep knowledge of theology, combined with his pastoral and administrative skills, has earned him widespread respect within the Church.
