Celluloid Dreams: SJCC Hosts Second Edition of Film Festival

St. Joseph College of Communication hosted the second edition of its film festival organised by the Media Studies department from July 23 to July 25, 2024. Mr. Adil M A and Mr. Unnikrishnan were the faculty coordinators of the film festival. The festival was inaugurated by renowned director Mahesh Narayanan. Over three days, 37 films were screened in categories including Director’s Corner, Campus Besties, and Competition Films. The festival kicked off with the screening of ‘Ariyippu’ by Mahesh Narayanan and included an interactive session, where he discussed the era of independent artists and collective viewing. The first day also featured a Masterclass by Joshy Benedict, a renowned artist and animator from Kerala. His independent short film “A Coconut Tree’ was also screened at the festival. The day concluded with the screening of ‘Apple Chedikal’ by alumni director, Gagan Dev. On the second day, the film ‘Aattam’ by Anand Ekarshi was screened, followed by competition films and a panel discussion with directors. The focus segment was another highlight of the festival which featured major academic projects of Gireesh Kumar(SRFTI) and Robin Joy(FTI). The day concluded with the screening of ‘Udaharanam Sujatha’ by alumni director, Phantom Praveen. The final day featured a screening of ‘Ela VeezhaPoonchira’ by Shahi Kabir. It was followed by an interactive session. The award ceremony recognized the best films submitted for the festival. The main jury members of the festival, Sajas Rahman announced the Competition Corner winners and Sunny Joseph announced the Best Campus Film. ‘Night Call’ by Sonu T P won the Best Film, while ‘Barsa’ by Akhilesh K A won the Best Campus Film title. ‘Hours on Earth and Somewhere Beyond’ by Afif Khan, and ‘Koottuprathi’ by Nikhil Sudersanan, received first and second runner-up awards, respectively. The awards were presented by Sajas Rahman, James Thakara, Sunny Joseph and Saji Raphael. The festival concluded with a live performance by James Thakara and a closing speech by Fr. Dr Joseph Parackal, who announced tentative dates for the next festival and praised the team for a successful event.
