The SJCC Film Festival, hosted annually by SJCC, aims to foster a filmmaking culture grounded in values, ethics, and social responsibility. More than simply a platform for film exhibition, our festival serves as a gathering where filmmakers, artists, and enthusiasts convene to engage in discussions, learning, and idea exchange.
Featuring a diverse array of films, spanning short films, feature films, documentaries, and animations, our festival is curated by a selection committee composed of seasoned professionals from the film industry. Their expertise ensures that the films showcased meet our stringent criteria for quality and artistic excellence.
In tandem with screenings, we organize workshops, panel discussions, and master classes, providing aspiring filmmakers with invaluable opportunities to glean insights from industry luminaries. Moreover, our festival serves as a nexus for networking and forging connections within the film community.
For students involved in organizing the festival, it serves as an educational platform. They have the chance to experience world-class cinema, engage with esteemed directors and industry professionals, and even showcase their own exemplary work. This exposure inspires students to strive for excellence in their filmmaking endeavours.
Furthermore, the festival becomes a festive occasion for students, as they curate cultural programmes in the evenings. This dual role of education and celebration underscores the multifaceted nature and significance of the SJCC Film Festival.
Photography holds a prominent place within the curriculum of the Department of Media Studies. Many of our students cherish a deep passion for photography and aim to specialize in various genres, including nature, portrait, street, sports, and travel photography. To showcase their talent and celebrate the art of photography, we organize competitions and exhibitions on occasions such as World Photography Day.
During these events, selected works from our students are prominently displayed. Additionally, we occasionally feature photographs from renowned photographers. Furthermore, themed exhibitions addressing socially relevant topics are periodically curated.
These exhibitions serve not only as platforms for learning but also as avenues for students to gain exposure and recognition for their work. They provide invaluable opportunities for students to refine their skills, explore different styles, and engage with broader societal issues through their photography.
The Department of Media Studies annually produces a social responsibility film. We have produced three road safety awareness films in collaboration with Maruti Suzuki and the Road Safety Department of the Kerala government. Notably, our anti-drug film titled "Balloon," produced in 2023 has garnered international acclaim. These films are conceived, directed, and executed by both faculty members and students, with students serving as crew members, gaining hands-on experience in the production process.
In collaboration with the drama club, students from the Department of Media Studies organize street plays to raise awareness about drug abuse. These plays are performed at various locations and on different occasions, providing students with practical application of their acting skills learned in their coursework.
Students specializing in Sound Design and Visual Editing organize music bands to perform at charitable organizations, including those catering to children, the homeless, and the elderly. Collaborating with the music club and campus ministry, these performances aim to entertain and uplift residents during festive occasions such as Christmas.
As part of the "Art and Visual Perception" course, the department arranges observation trips for students to historical and artistically significant locations. These trips enable students to analyze and appreciate art, culture, and tradition, fostering their visual imagination and understanding of visual representation through different art forms.
The department operates an active Consultancy Cell, where both faculty members and students offer consultation services in various areas such as film production, media management, online promotion, and studio construction. Specifically, the sound wing of the department specializes in providing consultancy for sound system installation, overseeing the design, construction, and acoustic treatment of recording and mixing studios, as well as assisting with equipment procurement.
This Consultancy Cell serves as a platform for faculty members and students to share their expertise with industry practitioners, fostering experimentation and new learning opportunities for clients. Consulting plays a vital role in facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise between academia and businesses, thereby nurturing productive relationships. By engaging with real-life challenges, consulting enriches the teaching and learning environment for both faculty members and students alike.
Media Park, an initiative of the department, serves as an entrepreneurship platform for students, allowing them to gain practical experience while earning income. Under faculty guidance, students undertake part-time jobs in photography, promotional video production, design, etc., staying updated with industry trends and practices.
Glanz Stars is a media fest and training programme designed for school students interested in media-related professions. Conducted by students and faculty members, the fest includes competitions in photography, story writing, set and sound designing, mono acting, poster designing, and anchoring training. It also provides opportunities for SJCC students to receive training in live sound mixing.
